Midian Tombs

WHAT IS IT

Midian Tombs

Surrounding Wadi Tayyb-Esm is today’s city of Al-Bad’, believed to be the capital of the ancient land of Midian. The Midianite civilization dates back to the 12th century BCE and is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and the Torah.

Midian is also where the Prophet Moses, peace be upon him, spent 10 years, after fleeing Egypt and living in exile before returning and freeing his people from Pharaoh Ramses II.

Coins have proven that the city was active during the Hellenistic, Nabataean, Roman and Islamic periods. On the mountains surrounding Al-Bad’ and carved from the rock, the Nabataeans created one of the most important archaeological sites in NEOM, the Midian Tombs, also called "Mugha’ir Shu’ayb", a name given by pilgrims, as a sign of respect, to the Prophet Shu’ayb, peace be upon him, who lived here.
